Wangy Bar Tricks
by John Mizarolli on Dec.09, 2011, under Electric Guitar Techniques
Some thoughts on Wangy Bar Techniques and maintenace. It’s main use is for creating a tremolo or vibrato effect! Guitar Vibrato means holding a note and alternating between actual pitch and either slightly higher or lower than actual pitch. The ideal initial control of this technique creates a symmetrical wave rhythmically and pitchwise! Then you can get more adventurous. Divebombing is hitting a harmonic and depressing the wangy bar down at whatever desired speed! The important thing is to control the pitch of single notes or chords! Early ancestor of the wangy bar was the “Bigsby” on various semi-acoustic electric guitars. Jeff Beck has a beautiful control of the wangy bar and he’s a good guitarist to listen to for wangy pitch control! Hank Marvin of The Shadows was an early innovator on the British Guitar Scene in the 60′s! If you wack on the distortion and send the guitar into full volume, you can have alot of fun with feedback. Hendrix feedback sounds need strong left hand muting techniques to allow the desired strings to bleed through while you wang about! Just use your ears and experiment in the soundscape. Obviously without tremlocks at the bridge and nut, your guitar will be extremely out of tune, the more you use it! So take all the stretch out of your strings before locking down the tremlock! This reduces the amount of “out of tuness” variation againgst increased usage. Make sure the wangy bar doesn’t wobble in it’s saddle. If the feel is not solid when you use it, either screw it in solid or get your guitar repair man to do it. Hope you find this short piece on wangy bar techniques useful. More to come, watch this space! .. thanx John Mizarolli
Current Music Biz Thoughts
by John Mizarolli on Nov.08, 2009, under Music Biz
I read that Bon Jovi stated that X-Factor is killing Rock Music and this hit a nerve and I have a possible future music biz template that might save millions of musicians from being eclipsed by Simon Cowells Glorified Karaoke Show, X-Factor. David Jackson, one of my guitar students also just told me that Sting has stated in the Evening Standard that X-Factor has set music back 40 years! Do you feel, like me that there really are no musicians rights ……. that we are expected to eat corporate pie or disappear!
